KDE, K Desktop Environment. Know More!

Many people those who are trying or associated with Linux had definitely come across the word KDE. Do you know what KDE means? What KDE has to do with Linux? Lets have a look here.

KDE means K Desktop Environment(where K has no meaning, as per my knowledge), KDE is a network transparent contemporary desktop environment for UNIX workstations.

KDE seeks to fulfil the need for an easy to use desktop for UNIX workstations, similar to desktop environments found on Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating systems. The UNIX operating system is according to us the best available today. When it comes to stability, scalability and openness UNIX has no competition.

KDE now provides an easy to use contemporary desktop environment available for UNIX and compatible systems. Together with a free implementation of UNIX such as GNU/Linux, UNIX/KDE constitutes a completely free and open computing platform available to anyone free of charge. Source code is available for anyone to look at, learn from, modify and improve. Whilst there is always room for improvement, KDE today delivers a viable feature packed alternative to the more commonly found commercial operating systems/desktops combinations available.

KDE will bring open, reliable, stable and monopoly-free computing enjoyed by scientists and computing professionals world-wide to the everyday user.

Below are few KDE users opinions:

  • A "Beautiful" contemporary desktop.
  • Complete network transparency and minimal need for configuration.
  • An integrated help system, thus allowing convenient and consistent access to help on the use of the desktop and applications.
  • Consistent look and feel.
  • Standardized menus, toolbars, keybindings, color-schemes, etc.
  • Internationalization: KDE is available in more than 50 languages.
  • Centralized, consistent, dialog driven desktop configurations.
  • A host of useful KDE applications.

In short you can say that KDE is directly responsible for the desk top environment in many Linux distributions.

You can get more knowledge about KDE, its projects and also about new launch/updates at www.kde.org .
